Highline Trail Llamas
Frequently Asked Questions
Llamas and General Trekking FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How much stuff can Llamas carry?

Llamas can carry about 20-25% of their body weight. However, due to hot weather, climbing altitude etc., we do not pack more than 80 pounds on any llama.

  2. What is the difference between mule/horse pack trips and llama pack trips?

Llamas are a low-impact version of horses/mules when it comes to pack trips. Because you are hiking you only need one llama per person as opposed to 2 horses per person (one to ride and one to pack). Also llamas have soft pads on the bottom of their feet, (like a dog) so they barely leave a track.

  3. Do we have to bring food for the llamas?

Llamas are very self-sufficient browsing on mountain cuisine so bringing food for them is not necessary. However, we always bring some cookies to treat them after a hard day work and more importantly in case one gets loose, they will most likely come back for cookies!

  4. How many llamas per person are recommended?

Usually one llama per person works out the best.

  5. Do we have to bring water?

You don't have to bring water, but many people like to have a few water bottles in their own backpack so it is easily accessible while they are hiking. We bring water filters for water needs.

  6. Which plants are poisonous to llamas in your area?

Lupin, Water Hemlock, Choke Cherry and Larkspur.
